Writing
A useful entry changes the model's next reply. This chapter is about writing facts that work in a scene instead of simply taking up space.
Make facts useful
An entry is not an encyclopedia article. The model reads it right before writing a reply, so every fact should give it something useful to show: an action, reaction, mood, or tension. If a fact changes nothing in the scene, it only takes up context.
I ask one question about every line: what will this change in the scene? If I cannot answer, I make the line more concrete or remove it.
Shapes the sceneРаботает
- Waters the gin for strangers; keeps the real bottle under the bar
- Counts the register twice and never in front of anyone
- Answers questions about family by asking whether the glass needs refilling
Only informs
- Gin was a popular spirit at the timeВ то время джин был популярным крепким напитком
- He is responsible with money
- He is private about his family
The left column takes longer to write, but it gives the model concrete behaviour to use. The right column reads like a character sheet and offers little direction for the next reply.
The same applies to places. I write what is happening in a room — who is in it, what it smells like, how the noise affects conversation — not when it was built or how large it is. Static architectural detail is usually less useful than the room's effect on the people inside it.
Let the past show in the present
Backstory is easy to turn into a chronology. A chronology explains what happened without showing how the past affects the character now.
Instead of retelling the past, I show its effect on the character's current behaviour. The event itself only needs mention when the reaction would not make sense without it.
Visible effect
- Flinches at casual weight comments; eats alone or not at allВздрагивает от брошенных вскользь замечаний о весе; ест в одиночестве или не ест вовсе
- Counts exits on entering a room, then pretends he was looking at the ceiling
- Will not be the last person in a building; invents errands at closing
Chronology
- He was bullied at school about his weight
- He grew up in a home where he was not safe
- Something bad happened to him at night once
The first column turns that context into behaviour visible in the scene.
Events, not scripted scenes
Entries about events and states have their own common problem: they turn into scripts. Beat by beat and line by line, the entry dictates exactly how the scene should go.
When a scripted entry fires, the scene plays out the same way every time, regardless of how the conversation was going. Worse, a mid-scene activation can make the model abandon what was happening and perform the script it was just handed.
A useful event entry has three parts and describes a change rather than a sequence:
- Trigger — the situation that sets the change in motion. Not a line of dialogue, but the situation itself.
- Shift — what changes in behaviour. Shorter sentences, hands busy, a joke that lands wrong.
- Aftermath — how the situation resolves and what changes afterward.
Trigger, shift, aftermath — never required dialogue. The moment an entry contains a line someone has to say, it stops describing behaviour and becomes a cutscene that repeats whenever the entry fires again.
Trajectory, not snapshot
A relationship written only as a current state goes nowhere. They are friends. She resents him. They used to be together. All true, all static, and none of it tells the model how the relationship is changing.
A trajectory gives the relationship a direction: where things stand, where they are heading, and what pushes them towards the next change.
Has a direction
- Civil at work and growing more polite by the day, which is the problem — politeness is how they maintain the distanceНа работе вежливы и с каждым днём всё вежливее — в этом и беда: вежливость помогает им держать дистанцию
- Owes her money and has started paying it back in amounts small enough to keep the debt alive
- Trusts him with the keys, not with the truth, and knows the two do not quite fit together
- They are coworkers who get along
- He owes her money
- They trust each otherОни доверяют друг другу
The structure of an entry
Every entry has the same four core parts, whatever the platform calls them: a name used mainly by the author, a set of keywords that decide when it fires, the content that gets inserted, and parameters that control its behaviour.
- NameИмя
- The name normally does not reach the model unless the platform’s Include Names option is enabled. It makes the right entry easy to find later, so I put a category marker at the front.
- Keywords
- Keywords determine when the entry fires. Everything else can be perfect, but a bad keyword list still means the entry never fires or fires constantly.
- Content
- What the model actually reads. I write it using the rules above: behaviour, effects of the past, shifts, and direction.
- Parameters
- Platform-specific controls for activation, placement, priority, timing, and similar behaviour. Mechanics explains them in more detail.
How I shape the content
Two habits keep the important details easy to find in a crowded prompt.
Bracketed labels. I break the content into short labelled blocks rather than a single paragraph. When several entries fire at once, the model sees a wall of text, and labels make its structure visible. The labels help me too — I can find the line I need to fix without re-reading the entry.
Put behaviour first. Personality, speech and reactions shape the reply most strongly, so I place them before reference details.
[VOICE] Short replies; changes the subject with a question.[REACTION] When money comes up, pours another drink and avoids exact numbers.[REFERENCE] Owns The Lamplighter; works closing hours.[VOICE] Short replies; changes the subject with a question.[REACTION] When money comes up, pours another drink and avoids exact numbers.[REFERENCE] Owns The Lamplighter; works closing hours.
I keep entries short enough that several can fire together without crowding out the conversation. Once the behaviour is clear, I stop adding detail — the goal is to shape the reply, not to document the person.
One worked example
This example uses an invented late-night bar called The Lamplighter, which returns in later chapters.
The Lamplighter. A late-night bar on a street with nothing else on it. Nic Ferreira works nights behind the bar. Odile Cross has owned the place since her early thirties. Dez Okonkwo works days, and their shifts overlap for one hour. Teddy Rusk is Nic's ex and still drinks there, which is the problem. Across the road is Pike Street Barbecue, where the staff eat after close. The Lamplighter.
* In lorebooks, I usually write everything in English to reduce token use.*
A separate NPC entryОтдельная запись для NPC
Not every NPC needs a separate entry. When one does, I leave out profile trivia such as birthdays, height, and hobby lists. Each line instead shows something visible in a scene or shapes the character's dialogue.

- Why it works
- Every block answers one question: how does she behave? The last one does double duty — it is a behaviour now, and later it turns out to be a symptom.
The same entry as data
Behind the editor interface, an entry is a small object. Field names differ between platforms, but the basic shape stays the same: something to match, something to insert, and a few switches that decide when and where.

Quick rules
Use these as prompts when an entry feels flat, not as strict rules.
What I doЧто я делаю
- Show what each fact changes in the character's behaviour
- Connect the past to the character's behaviour nowСвязываю прошлое с нынешним поведением персонажа
- Give each event a trigger, a change, and an aftermath
- Show where a relationship is heading, not only where it stands
- Split content into short labelled blocks
- Put behaviour and voice first, reference details lastСтавлю поведение и речь в начало, справочные детали — в конец
- Use one consistent name for each place
What I avoid
- Fill setting entries with encyclopedia-style facts
- Retell backstory as a timeline
- Write a scene line by line inside an entry
- Give the model instructions inside a regular lore entry
- Repeat facts already present in the card
- Make entries so long that they crowd out the chat
- Put a secret where it can surface too early
Within each entry, I keep point of view and tense consistent. Third person is my usual choice, while the tense depends on the material — present or past. Names stay consistent too: if one entry says The Lamplighter and another says the bar on Pike, the model may treat them as different places.
A well-written entry still cannot help if it does not fire at the right moment. The next chapters cover the technical side: Mechanics explains the settings, Keywords covers choosing effective keys, and Regex covers precise matching.
